Impact Stories - “The Works We Did”

The Works We Did

Over the past three decades, HEDO has led numerous projects that changed lives and landscapes across Sri Lanka. Here are some highlights:

Vermicomposting for Barren Land Rehabilitation (1999–2000):

Transformed degraded lands into fertile agricultural fields through eco-friendly composting—recognized by the Sri Lankan Environment Ministry as a top 10 environmental project.

Micro-Hydro Energy Project – Janhithagama Village (1999–2000):

Brought clean, renewable electricity to rural households, reducing dependency on harmful fuels.

Eco-Friendly Rubber Cultivation (2014–2016):

Introduced Biogas Technology and Efficient Rubber Drying Houses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—awarded 2nd runner-up in Yale University’s 2017 global competition.

Rajuruwagala Forest Conservation (2002–2004):

Protected biodiversity in key forest areas while educating local communities on sustainable land practices.

Current Situation:

Rural Poverty & Economic Instability: Farmers and workers in tea, paddy, and vegetable industries face severe income drops due to climate impacts and rising costs.

Climate Change Challenges: Increased crop damage, water scarcity, and deforestation threaten long-term food and environmental security.

Youth Vulnerability: Many rural youth lack educational support and are at risk of exploitation through unsafe migration and scams.

Rural Women at Risk: Many fall victim to illegal lending schemes, worsening family financial crises.
